Olusegun Awolowo Jr., Grandson of Sage Awolowo, Dies at 61

The Obafemi Awolowo family has announced the passing of Olusegun Awolowo Jr., a respected Nigerian lawyer and the grandson of the late statesman, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

In a heartfelt statement, the family described him as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who remained deeply committed to his loved ones, his work, and the country he served. “He was the world’s most phenomenal husband, father, and grandfather — steady, wise, endlessly loving, and the constant anchor of our family,” they said.

They also praised his unwavering dedication to Nigeria, calling him “a painfully loyal servant” who gave his life to national service with vision, integrity, and passion.

Awolowo Jr. served as the Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) from 2013 to 2021, where he played a key role in promoting the country’s trade and export growth. Born on September 27, 1963, he was widely admired for his commitment to public service and for his efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s economic future.

The family expressed deep gratitude for his life and legacy, praying, “May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.”

Olusegun Awolowo Jr. is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. His death marks the end of a life rooted in family, faith, and service, leaving behind a legacy that will be felt both in public leadership and in the hearts of those who loved him.
