Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team has announced plans to challenge his conviction, insisting that the ruling is flawed and cannot stand.

Speaking to journalists at the Federal High Court shortly after Justice James Omotosho sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment, his lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, who attended as a consultant, said they would immediately take the case to a higher court.

Ejimakor argued that it was wrong to convict someone based solely on spoken words, questioning why such a decision would come from the Federal High Court.

“What kind of precedent is this? We are taking this straight to the Court of Appeal,” he said.

He added that the Court of Appeal, which he described as the closest thing to a jury system in Nigeria, would carefully review what happened in court. According to him, the legal team is confident the justices will recognize that the day’s proceedings represented “a travesty of justice.”

Ejimakor affirmed that the legal fight would continue all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary.

“Nnamdi Kanu will not remain convicted. This judgment will be overturned,” he said confidently.
