President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently engaged in a strategic bilateral discussion with the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, as both countries move toward sealing a £746 million deal aimed at overhauling Nigeria’s port facilities.
According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the engagement forms part of a broader effort to deepen diplomatic relations and expand economic collaboration between Nigeria and the UK.
The visit is expected to produce several agreements spanning key areas such as commerce, investment, defence, and cultural exchange, highlighting a renewed commitment to stronger bilateral cooperation.
Central to the discussions is a major financing package facilitated by UK Export Finance in partnership with the Nigerian Ports Authority and the Federal Ministry of Finance. The funds will be channelled into upgrading the Lagos Port Complex and the Tin Can Island Port Complex, two of Nigeria’s most vital maritime hubs.
The presidency noted that the initiative is in line with the administration’s agenda to modernise critical infrastructure and attract international investment to drive economic growth.
Prior to the talks, President Tinubu and the First Lady were hosted at Windsor Castle by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, a gesture that reflects the enduring relationship between both nations.
The President is accompanied by a high-powered delegation, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi, Finance Minister Wale Edun, Industry Minister Jumoke Oduwole, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.
Other officials on the trip include Dele Alake, Mohammed Idris, Bianca Ojukwu, Hannatu Musawa, Bosun Tijani, Christopher Musa, and Mohammed Mohammed.
The outcome of the meeting is expected to pave the way for enhanced collaboration, particularly in infrastructure development and broader economic growth between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
