The Lagos State Government has announced the arrest of several individuals during an enforcement exercise aimed at reducing street begging and maintaining order in public places across the state.
The Commissioner for the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, revealed this development on Tuesday through a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
According to Wahab, the operation began in the Agege area where enforcement officers initially apprehended 25 beggars during routine patrol activities. The monitoring team later extended the exercise to other parts of the state.
He explained that by about 12 noon, the enforcement team had arrested a total of 86 individuals engaged in street begging, alongside nine children and 12 persons suspected to be involved in disruptive activities across areas covered in the operation, including Ketu.
Wahab stated that all individuals taken into custody would undergo proper documentation and profiling before being transferred to the appropriate government bodies for further processing in accordance with existing laws and social welfare procedures.
He also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to sustaining the operation in order to curb street begging, safeguard vulnerable residents, and ensure cleaner and more orderly public spaces throughout Lagos.
The enforcement drive is part of a broader statewide campaign launched earlier in 2026 to tackle street begging and other public nuisances.
In a related development on Monday, officials of the Lagos State Government arrested a man for allegedly disposing of waste on a public road. Wahab noted that the suspect was apprehended during an early morning patrol carried out by enforcement officers.
