Security around the Abia State Government House in Umuahia was noticeably tightened on Thursday after news broke about the judgment delivered by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, convicting IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu.
The increased security presence is seen as a precaution, especially since Kanu’s hometown is not far from the Government House.
By midday, heavily armed police officers had taken positions at both the main entrance and exit of the complex. Their presence caught the attention of passersby and motorists, many of whom slowed down to take a look at the unusual level of security activity.
The deployment appeared to be aimed at preventing any possible unrest or sudden protests following the ruling.
Even with the heavy security, Umuahia stayed largely calm, though the mood in the city was visibly subdued. Conversations about the judgment dominated the streets, with many residents speaking in hushed tones.
Reactions were mixed, some residents openly expressed their displeasure with the court’s decision, while others disagreed with the ruling entirely.
Checks across various parts of Abia State confirmed that everywhere remained peaceful, with no incidents of violence or disruption reported.
